BYZANTINE HERITAGE IN ISTANBUL

"Byzantine Heritage in Istanbul" is an undergraduage elective course in the programme of Department of Architecture in Istanbul Technical University Architecture Faculty.

Course Description: Learning the Late Antique and Middle Ages history of Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, examining urban patterns, forums, water supply systems, street network, buildings etc. that remained until today from the Byzantine era, discussing what happened to the Byzantine building stock during Ottoman era.

"Byzantine Heritage in Istanbul course had been opened for the first time in 2016-2017 Fall Semester, by Asst. Prof. Dr. Bilge Ar. The course had been held with the participation of  22 registered students.

General approaches of research, Byzantine building materials, Byzantine builders and patronage and Byzantine urbanism has been discussed. Early Christian architecture have been examined. An emphasis was put on the Late Antique period of Constantinople and semester went on with the examinations of chosen existing architectural examples from Istanbul of Mid and Late Byzantine period.

The course housed a series of excursions to Byzantine monuments and sites in Istanbul. Students have prepared presentations on chosen topics and have given these during the excursions on site. 

​

The final evaluation of the course involves these presentations and a final exam.
